Born in London, England in 1969, Terry Rashbrook’s first attempt at self-expression was to pee in the nurse’s face shortly after birth, so the story goes.
The eldest of three children, he relocated to the United States at the age of 18. Living in both New York and Detroit, he eventually settled in Chicago, Illinois 13 years ago, where he currently resides today.
As a painter, Terry has been exploring and developing color as “the vocabulary of his imagination”. His paintings are intended to provoke, by altering the mood of spaces in which they live, thereby elevating the viewer to a higher state of being. Using various techniques, he is able to imbue his paintings with an energy and visual tension, inviting the observers’ mind to co-create and playfully interact with the work. Terry has developed cheekily assertive shorthand that simultaneously catches one’s attention and impresses.
Early in his career, he was inspired by nature and artists, such as August Macke, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and later Frank Stella and Paul Klee to name a few.
While his motifs initially appear simple, the essences of his paintings contain potent qualities of positivity, accompanied by elements of peace and calm. Interwoven throughout his compositions, are a playful dance and rhythmic balance seen through the lens of masculine and feminine energies. Terry’s use of color is engaging, restorative and beguiling.
